Post from Jodie (Mom)
The day after Kollin’s breathing tube was put in was a
pretty peaceful day. They kept him
sedated and he was able to get some much needed rest. He did have One very special visitor that
really lifted his spirits. Susan Daynes,
who is a friend of the Gaufin’s stopped by with her therapy dog, “DIVA”. Diva is the cutest female yellow lab and has
been specially trained to help kids work through therapy. She jumped right up on a chair and we rolled
the chair next to the bed. Kollin
immediately reached out his hand wanting to touch her. Susan gave KPG small slices of carrots to
feed her. At first Susan would put the
carrot slice in Kollin’s hand, but by the end he was grabbing it from her
(impressive move). This was the
highlight of the day. Thank You Cynthia
Gaufin for making that happen and Thank You Diva!!!!!!! We will see her again, since Susan volunteers
in the Rehab unit.
That night Kollin began to have some problems breathing as
they slowly backed off on his sedation drugs and he became more aware of the
fact that he had a tube down his throat that was uncomfortable. Or so we thought. The entire night and ALL of yesterday his
struggle for breath became progressively worse.
He would write on a white board things like, “I can’t breathe”, or “I
need air”, or “Heavy” to which we would
ask, “Your chest feels heavy??” he would nod his head, Yes. When Doctors heard this they would reply that
his swelling in his spinal cord was most likely the cause. This is what we
would expect to see. That the swelling
was now affecting the nerves that control the muscles between the ribs that aid
in breathing. This made sense to us, but
did in NO way make us feel better as we stood by his side and watched him
struggle for each and every breath all day long. Our parental instincts kept telling us that
something just wasn’t right. HE kept
telling us something wasn’t right. I
began to pray that God would send someone to us that could help us figure out what
was wrong. My pleadings were short, but
frequent as Gary and I attended to Kollins needs. Eyes shut, eyes open, I
prayed. Just before 7:00pm they decided
to do a cat scan on him because of something that showed up on an X-ray done
earlier in the day. A Hematoma (a
pooling of blood) was seen in the Mediastinum- in the area above the
heart. They wanted to rule out any
problems with the Aorta. Could this be what was causing so many breathing
problems?? When we returned from doing
the Cat Scan it was time for shift changes among the medical team taking care
of Kollin. A respiratory therapist named
Troy would be our guy. He walked in the
room and took one look at Kollin and said, “that’s not normal breathing and we
need to do something about it.” The
Attending doc, Dr. Poss agreed 100%.
Thus began the troubleshooting to check every possibility. The respirator was changed out, Kollin was
given Albuterol in case it could be an Asthma issue. I’s were dotted and T’s
were crossed. The results from the cat
scan came back—Aorta intact and fine, but hematoma still there. Nothing significant. Still my prayers persisted. This time I knew
we had the right people, but they needed help figuring things out. “Please Heavenly Father help these men to
know what to do to help my baby boy.” I
began to have a greater understanding of the pain that our God endured as he
watched his son suffer on the cross. How
unbearable that must have been. Breathing struggles persisted. Around midnight the attending doc came in to
show us something that he had discovered on the Cat Scan that the radiologist
had missed. As Dr. Poss went over the
scan with a fine tooth comb, slice by slice, he discovered that the hematoma
was located behind the Trachea (or wind pipe) and that it was pushing on the
trachea just below the level of the breathing tube, making the trachea about
half it’s size in diameter. So instead
of breathing through a garden hose, it was like breathing through a straw for
Kollin for over 24hrs. Everything Kollin
had been telling us was exactly true!!!!!!!
Our hearts have been so heavy over this discovery, but we are ever so
Grateful to a loving Heavenly Father who is ALWAYS listening. We acknowledge
His hand in ALL things. Prayers were
answered, MIRACLES abound, Kollin is Loved.
The Respiratory Therapist was able to advance the breathing tube lower
in the trachea to expand the collapsed area.
Immediately his breathing changed and became normal. It was decided that he would be put back on
some meds to keep him relaxed and comfortable for the night. It is currently Noon on Thursday Sept.
5th. KPG slept peacefully and is
comfortable and resting now. Later today
he will be going back to surgery where they will drain the hematoma and try to
figure out where the bleeding came from in the first place. Most likely it’s just a result of the fusion
surgery. We are hopeful that after this
is resolved and healed, that the breathing tube will be able to come out. Much Love to All of You that have kept Kollin
and our family in your thoughts and prayers.
We FEEL it each and every day, and couldn’t do this without YOU!!!!!!!

While Kollin was struggling to even breathe, he could see my heart was breaking, and wanted to comfort me with a long hug..........
So happy for this blog! Now I don't have to keep bugging people in your family multiple times each day for updates. :) You know you have so many people praying and thinking about each and every one of you. Hang in there.
ReplyDeletePlease never stop praying for miracles. They DO happen. This is still so early in his recovery. I continue to pray for Kollin and all of you. I broke my neck when I was 19 and was told I wouldn't walk again....a Priesthood blessing revealed that I would. The Power of the Priesthood is real and true! Continue having hope :) Bless you and your family. You are an amazing family :)

i do not know you guys but came over to read your blog from stephanie nielson's blog. please know that complete strangers are lifting kollin up in prayers along with your sweet family. i started crying through this last blog while looking at the pictures.....how true that our pain on this earth is only a tiny fraction of what our heavenly father goes through. my family went through a very scary incident involving my younger sister going into cardiac/respiratory arrest minutes before delivery my neice. she had no heart beat for 14 minutes & was shocked MULTIPLE times. while ALL odds were against both my neice & sister every living a "normal" life we prayed & believed while family, friends, & complete strangers prayed & believed with us!! GOD IS THE GREAT HEALER & PHYSICIAN & HE CAN PERFORM MIRACLES!! my sister just started college & my neice is the smartest fiestiest 1 1/2 year old i know!! so i'm sending prayers & encouragement your way.....know that when you are weak & can't find the strength to utter even short prayers.....others are doing it for you! where 2 or more are gathered.......
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI came to your blog from Stephanie's blog post of yesterday. I am sending prayers for Kollin that he continues to recover now that he can breathe easier. So brave. It must have been so frightening for him. I hope the surgery went well and that he has a restful day today. Prayers also to his family and friends who are standing by him with love and support.
Hugs,
Barbara Diane
It appears that Nie Nie's Blog is reaching the masses. I live in California and have followed Stephanie's blog since her accident 5 years ago. She is my hero. I'm praying for your son Kollin too. It seems the list of prayers gets longer each day as my son's mission in Idaho just experienced a tragedy. (car crash with injured Elder). At any rate, God hears our prayers and sends comfort in unexpected ways. I'd love to put your son's name in the Los Angeles Temple... but not certain if this has been done already. I'm sure it has in some temple in your area. God Bless and stay the course. Bonnie Card Monrovia, California
ReplyDeleteI am praying for your son.
ReplyDeleteWe are praying in Iowa!! God Bless the Dr's and nurses, family and friends.
ReplyDeleteKollin-We love you! I want you to know how much you consume our thoughts every day and how much we look forward to visiting you! Your strength is an inspiration to the entire Teacher's Quorum. Your ability to comfort your dad (who is a total stud)under the circumstances is a reminder of your huge heart and that family matters most. You will always be a part of the Quorum family and a friend of ours. Last week's lesson was all about you...and it will be the same this Sunday. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Get the rest you need and stay positive. We look forward to seeing you soon. Much love, Kevin Colarusso and the Teacher's Quorum
ReplyDeletePraying for you.
ReplyDeleteI worked with Diva on a movie set. She ADORES cheeze-its. She's a great dog.
Found your blog via Stephanie Nielson, So sorry, we are praying for your family and for Kollin!
ReplyDeleteSaw this from Nienie's blog. You don't know me but I'll be praying from Virginia, and will put Kollin's name on the Washington DC Temple prayer roll. You are not alone. My favorite hymn lyrics, "He answers privately, reaches my reaching."
ReplyDeleteFollowed the link from Stephanie Nielson's blog. That last picture just about broke my heart. Please know complete strangers are lifting Kollin and your family up in prayer. Many blessings, Amanda in Washington State
ReplyDeleteI came from Stephanie's blog, as well. Your sweet boy is so handsome and strong. I can just feel the love your family has for each other. My husband and I are lifting Kollin and the rest of your family up in prayer. May God bless you through this difficult time. Love from Orem!
ReplyDeleteI also came from Stephanie's blog. I will keep Kollin in my prayers and put his name on the Spokane Washington Temple prayer roll.
ReplyDeleteJodie, Thanks for creating this blog. I've been asking Max repeatedly for any update on Kollin. That picture of him hugging his dad makes me cry. We're praying and pleading...
ReplyDeleteI also follow Stephanie Nielson's blog. Her family means so much to her. Even though I don't know your family I wanted to let you know that I am praying for Kollin and your family since I read about him this morning.
ReplyDeleteJennifer
We love you!!!! Elder Trevor Brown wants Kollin to know that he is fasting and praying for him. He said to tell Kollin that he is a great young man and he can do hard things and to never lose faith in himself or Heavenly Father.
ReplyDeleteLove, Sheralyn
I love your comment: Eyes shut, eyes open, we prayed.
ReplyDeleteWe are doing the same -- he is always in our thoughts and a constant prayer is rising up from your friends. Be still and know that the Lord is God.
Kollin was in my food's class when I was in 8th grade. We would talk together, and he was always so happy and had such a sweet spirit. At school, he would always say hi to me and it would brighten my day. When I found out about his accident, I couldn't believe it. I went to the temple to do baptisms with my brother, and encouraged him to join me in praying for Kollin. On Sunday, our whole family fasted for him. I would appreciate if you would tell Kollin that everyone is praying, and my whole family (who doesn't even know him) is very concerned! we all love him, and have faith that he will get better!
