My name is Ron Squire (this is showing up as a comment from my wife, Mikael) but I wanted to reach out after I saw the special on KSL tonight about Kollin. Over 9 years ago I suffered a spinal cord injury while serving my mission for the church in Mexico. I shattered my thoracic 8 vertebrae, cracked t-10/12 and a series of other injuries after falling off a ledge while hiking. I was told I would never walk again. Several surgeries later, endless hours in rehab, and many miracles along the way I am now able to walk with a cane and live a good life in Spanish Fork with my wife and child.
I loved reading about Kollin's attitude throughout this process. I especially can relate to how a sense of humor is so crucial in a time like this and how it can carry you through some of the toughest trials of one's life. I loved the statement regarding Kollin's ability to continue to live an active and fulfilling life but just in a different way. I have experienced that myself. I also know what a good support system of family, friends, and community can do for recovery on many different levels. I would love to offer that support to you and your family. If at any time you would like to talk about anything please don't hesitate to contact me. I wish you all the best and know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you.
I just read Kollin's story and was so impressed with his positive attitude! My brother had a trampoline accident when he was 14 as well and broke his neck and his back. This story brought back so many memories. I thought Kollin might enjoy learning about Mike Schlappi who's family was from Orem when I lived there. Mike had an accident when he was 14 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He is a motivational speaker and a Gold Medalist. He married a beautiful wife and has a beautiful family! You will have to look him up! I will never forget the excitement that went through the school when we learned Mike and his wife were expecting their first child! They need to become friends because Mike and Kollin have a lot in common including that positive attitude! If you need help getting a hold of the Schlappi's let me know. lbknudsen@comcast.net
